'Anakin And Padme' is serenely playful, coming off like its intentions belie: a flirtatious love passage. Granted the latter of the two does incorporate ever-so-faint elements of the classic Star Wars theme, but here it feels like clutching at straws rather than paying homage to the past. But both lack any of John Williams signature sounds, those recognizable elements that make a composition uniquely his. And 'Yoda And The Underlings' is appropriately ethereal. Sure, the swirling hyper intensity of 'Zam The Assassin/The Chase Through Coruscant' is unnerving. Hard-pressed would it be for any but the loyally obsessive fanboy to be able to recognize any of these movements as being from Star Wars were they to be played as background noise at a restaurant. As with Episode I, the music here is unquestionably exciting, yet it lacks any of the distinctness that makes it undeniably Star Wars. Yet with the second trilogy Williams has drifted further and further away from this approach, creating excitingly bland themes ('Across The Stars (Love Theme From Attack Of The Clones)') and more or less eschewing the extensive use of repetitive refrains. Williams initial score for George Lucas' space opera earned its rightful place in the annals of film composition for relying on a volley of repeated motifs that became recognizable chunks of Post Modern music, regardless of genre.

Let's face it film composition has always dwelt below the art of pure classical composition, just as composing for TV falls below film within the perceived orchestral music hierarchy. Now this is not to insinuate that composing music for films is not serious. Williams, who has always had generous amounts of minimalistic pop sensibilities floating around in his music (the theme from Jaws, the theme from Close Encounters, just to name a few of his signatures) seems to be traversing across the realm of 'serious' composition with the second trilogy. Yet as with The Phantom Menace, the music here lacks any of the poppy punch that made the original music from the first trilogy so memorable. That is to say that John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra (and London Voices, too), continue to mine the rich aural tapestries they begun some two decades-and-change ago. It then slips into musical terrain not unlike that of Episode I. As has become tradition, Episode II commences with the iconoclastic ' Star Wars Main Title,' bar none one of the most recognizable movie themes of all time.
